Best educational YouTube channels for a curious 5-year-old?

Main Post:

I am looking for quality educational videos for my young son, what do you like. Ideally suitable for age 5. He is very interested, he is such a walking encyclopedia. I came across the Little Explorers Universe channel, it's great but a bit too short and simple for me, I'm looking for something where kids learn a lot. What would you recommend for a youtube channel?

Top Comment: My daughter is 4 and obsessed with SciShow Kids. They have videos on literally everything you could think of, aimed primarily are primary/elementary school aged kids. Most of the videos are like 5 mins but they have compilation videos on topics that combine lots of stuff about one thing.

Good kids content on YouTube?

Main Post:

Hey y'all. I'm watching my playcousin (3F) and she keeps trying to watch YouTube. Whenever I put it on, we'll watch kids content that she picks out.

The problem is the content seems very harmful for children (one of them was a thinly veiled diaper fetish video) and because I have no kids, I don't keep up with that side enough to redirect her.

Any recommendations for human made, non-shady (undisclosed advertisements etc), kid friendly YouTube content with substance? I know about Gracie's Corner but from my understanding they're just songs.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Thank you so much for all the recommendations!!

What is up with the weird "kids" videos that have been trending on YouTube lately?

Main Post:

So lately every time I go on YouTube there are really strange videos showing up on my trending page. They seem to be aimed at young kids but they're super creepy and disturbing. For example, there's a channel called Candy Monster that posts weird MLP cartoon videos with thumbnails such as cartoon characters kissing, being run over by cars, and having their legs pulled off. This is only one of the many YouTube channels with weird "kids" content, some of which post multiple times every hour and get millions of views every time. The comments on these videos are always really strange as well. My question is: who is making these videos, who is watching them, and why are they allowed on YouTube? Is this some kind of bot network? What exactly is the purpose of these channels?

Top Comment:

Here's an article about it, and here's another one. It seems that the millions of views are coming from kids who are mistakenly watching the vids when the parents leave them with the iPad (either they click on a suggested video, or it autoplays).

As for why people are making these...it's not clear. The first article has a guy claiming that he's making it for adults, and that children are accidentally stumbling across them. But the second article makes it clear that these videos are being tagged in such a way that they're intended to show up on children's lists. They're also not really made for adults; many of them seem to be made to disturb children. I also don't buy the argument that they're simply made for views; less disturbing videos would be better at that.

The guy in the first article blames parents who leave their children with the iPad. Maybe this is made to get at parents who don't pay attention (and ends up hurting kids who already suffer from an inattentive parent). Or maybe it's just disturbed individuals out there who just want to scare little kids. It's not clear.

Top Comment: I think its very important that we don't see this as a problem specific to youtube and children. Reddit is pulling the same trick on our minds, its just slightly requires slightly more sophisticated content. I think I'm going to try and take a break. Wish me luck, I have tried many times but I'm always sucked back. 10+ yrs on here and I've developed a bad habit i.e. addiction
